OPTIONAL: Philanthropic Campus Tour

9:30 a.m.

Tour of the belfry in Burton Memorial Tower with a focus on the history and philanthropic support of the Charles Baird Carillon. Built in 1936, the carillon was a gift from Charles Baird, the University of Michigan’s first athletic director, and the tower was funded by Ann Arbor community members and named for former university president Marion Leroy Burton. 

The bell chamber is accessed by elevator to floor 8, followed by two flights of stairs (39 steps). Hearing protection will be provided. As a historic structure, the tower is not ADA accessible.


Featured guide: Tiffany Ng, associate professor of carillon and university carillonist at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
